Special Needs Teaching Assistants Required – North Leeds Wetherby

At Career Teachers we are currently working in partnership with a Specialist Setting in the North of Leeds who require additional teaching assistants to join their team from the 15th of April 2024.

As a special needs teaching assistant, you will be helping children with a wide range of severe learning, physical or behavioural difficulties. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Supporting with schoolwork under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Preparing learning resources, taking into consideration the unique learning needs of each child and tailoring learning and activities accordingly.
  • Encouraging children’s confidence, self-esteem and independence.
  • Helping children to understand instructions, through repetition, re-phrasing or demonstrating.
  • Putting into practice individual education, social, behavioural, and personal care programmes.
  • Encouraging children to communicate with one another and with staff, using communication aids such as Makaton and PECs (picture exchange cards) where necessary.
  • Providing feedback and assistance to teachers.
  • Supporting children in social activities and on outings.
  • Assisting children during therapy sessions.
  • Recognising signs of distress in children and offering reassurance.
  • Remaining calm in challenging situations.
  • Attending to pupils’ physical needs.

This is an extremely rewarding career path to go down, this role would suit anyone who has previous experience working within a specialist setting, a school setting or for those who are looking to start a career in special education.

Relevant SEND qualifications would be advantageous, but experience of working with young people is essential.

Your main responsibility as a special needs teaching assistant is to foster a calm and safe environment a vital element of this role is nurturing the social and emotional capabilities of children. This can involve helping them to express and regulate their emotions, become confident playing and working with others, and supporting behavioural needs.

You’ll help to create a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment where pupils feel valued and supported, so that their overall well being is the best it can be, and they can enjoy positive relationships with others.

These are full time roles, Monday to Friday (term time only) working between the hours of 8.30-15.30 with the occasional exception of an after-school training course. While they are full time roles, at present we will also be able to consider candidates with a full-time availability.
